23. Dropping the Evening Wood
In an intriguing episode of wartime espionage and counter-espionage, the Germans embarked on a covert operation to construct fake wooden airfields. However, British intelligence was steps ahead, having infiltrated or cracked German communication channels to learn of these plans.

Demonstrating a mix of cunning and humor that characterized some aspects of the otherwise grim conflict, the British concocted a fitting response. Upon completion of the first German wooden airfield, instead of deploying real munitions, the British aircrew humorously dropped a fake wooden bomb on it.
