33. Here’s My Certificate of Proof
Nicholas Alkemade’s survival story is nothing short of miraculous. On the night of March 24, 1944, Alkemade, a 21-year-old airman aboard an Avro Lancaster bomber, faced a dire choice when his aircraft was set ablaze by a German night fighter. With his parachute destroyed by the fire, he chose to jump from the spiraling plane at 18,000 feet rather than face certain death in the inferno.
Remarkably, his fall through the night sky ended with him landing in a dense forest, cushioned by pine trees and a thick layer of snow, which astonishingly resulted in only a sprained leg. Captured by the Germans, his incredible tale was met with skepticism until the crash site corroborated his story, earning him a unique certificate from the Gestapo acknowledging his unbelievable descent. Alkemade’s ordeal made him a legendary figure among prisoners of war until his repatriation in May 1945.
