Facts and Stories from WWII That We Won’t Find in History Books

May 1, 2026 by Regina Clarke

6. The Career Soldier

Yang Kyoungjong’s story is a unique footnote in the annals of WWII history. As a Korean, he found himself conscripted into an unwelcome odyssey through the military forces of three different powers. Initially drafted by the Japanese army due to Korea’s colonial status, his journey took a dramatic turn when he was captured by the Soviets during a battle.

Forced to fight for the Soviet Union, his saga continued when he was again captured, this time by the German army, and pressed into service on the European front. His unlikely journey ended in Normandy, France, where he was captured by US forces.
