A significant hotel red flag is if you can smell smoke in a hotel that says they are smoking-free. This is a red flag because it means they SAY they have a no-smoking policy, but they don’t enforce it. They let smoking in the hotel rooms slip through the cracks, and it can negatively affect your experience if you’re looking for a smoke-free environment. 

There are probably a lot of reasons for this, but we’re guessing it has to do with staff not being paid enough to care about guests breaking the rules. The housekeeping staff is probably not equipped with the right supplies to thoroughly clean rooms, either. As for the smoking fines, those are probably not heavily enforced. Just make sure to read reviews before booking anywhere!
