#31: Just Float

Professionals are always telling people, “do not panic” in emergency situations. Although that’s easier said than done, it is worthwhile advice. We don’t think clearly when we panic, which can lead to poor decisions and potentially harmful outcomes. Although reigning in the panic during an emergency situation takes practice and training, it’s worth a try.

An easy way to avoid panicking is by drilling safety facts and procedures into your head so that they’re second nature. For example, if you are in a drowning situation, it’s important to stop thrashing, control your breathing, and lean back. These actions will help you float to the surface. Remaining calm can also give you more time to decide what to do next.
