In an early scene of The Fellowship of the Rings, Gandalf violently bangs his head on a ceiling beam in Bilbo Baggin’s home. Gandalf bumping his head makes perfect sense since he is a comically tall man in a small hobbit’s house.
However, the bump was a total accident! Ian McKellen is seen clumsily bumping into the chandelier. This part was rehearsed, but when he turned around to walk away, he ran full speed into a beam.
